Let’s meet Sarah K L Wilson, and my take on Dragon School: First Flight.

USA Today bestselling author, Sarah K. L. Wilson loves spinning a yarn and if it paints a magical new world, twists something old into something reborn, or makes your heart pound with excitement… all the better! Sarah hails from the rocky Canadian Shield in Northern Ontario – learning patience and tenacity from the long months of icy cold – where she lives with her husband and two small boys. You might find her building fires in her woodstove and wishing she had a dragon handy to light them for her. (Author Bio provided by Amazon)

Review

I was introduced to Amel Leafbrought and Raolcan the majestic Purple Dragon on a stormy summers evening when the power in my neighbourhood went out, due to storm damage. Being a Book Slave of note, my Kindle and iPad are always charged and at the ready for a marathon reading session. I cuddled up on my reading chair, the room lit only by my little camping light, and scrolled through the books on my iPad; there are many, as I am forever buying books and storing them for when I get time to read them. I was drawn to the cover of Dragon School: First Flight, purple being one of my favourite colours. The big Purple Dragon, Raolcan, flew off the cover and invited me to enter his world and also meet fragile but headstrong Amel Leafbrought, Dragon Rider initiate.

Amel Leafbrought, was injured as a toddler when the village her family lived in got invaded by raiders. She was left with an injured leg and hip that would see her hobbling along with the aid of a crutch for the rest of her life. In her teens, Amel leaves her family and village behind to join Dragon School and become a Dragon Rider. On arrival, Amel meets the other initiate Dragon Riders in her group. They are all from different backgrounds, some even Nobel. Being from a peasant village, lumbered with a limp, relying on a crutch, Amel appears to be weak and is whispered about and treated with disdain. No one trusts Amel to become a fully-fledged Dragon Rider. It’s a gruelling process, you have to be strong and sometimes people die attempting First Flight.

The day came for Amel’s group to choose their Dragons. The Dragons all have different colours, linking them to a specific Dominion, green, red, golden, black and more. The colour you choose determines your role for the rest of your life as a Dragon Rider. Amel wants to gain a purpose in life considering her disability. She is the last one to choose her Dragon. As she makes her way past many alcoves of Dragons already chosen, her thoughts wander as to what kind of Dragon she will be able to choose. Suddenly there is a voice magically speaking to her in her mind, telling her that she will not be choosing a Dragon. Flustered and close to tears she sees her dream slipping away, until the mystery voice speaks again, telling Amel that a Dragon has already chosen her. Raolcan, the big Purple Dragon, chose Amel. They immediately bond and become a courageous force to be reckoned with.

I loved reading Dragon School: First Flight, thoroughly enjoyed Amel’s character, frowned upon those in her initiate group that looked down on her, and wished that I had a big Purple Dragon of my own. Amel’s character is daring, have lots of courage and shows the world that even if one has a disadvantage in life, you can excel and succeed. We are not all created equal, but if you put your mind to something, you can do it! At times all we need is a little nudge, belief and encouragement. In Amel’s case, Raolcan the big Purple Dragon.

Enter the fantastical world of colourful Dragons and courageous Dragon Riders, pop over to Amazon now, get your copy and be amazed! I highly recommend Dragon School: First Flight. You will not be disappointed! I cannot wait to pick up the next read by Sarah K. L. Wilson. Pure magic!
